K.P. Yohannan, in his book: “Come, let’s reach the world”, states: “There is currently a huge wave of short-term mission programs in the United States. The Latin American Evangelist website estimates that in 1998, 450,000 short-term missionaries were sent from the United States.” Why would you get involved in this one?
Well, simply stated, out of all the mission organizations, MGM is one of the few, if not the only one focused on the Americans. That may, at first, sound like the wrong priority, but as founder Jim McDonald puts it: “People go on this trip and their lives are changed!”
Americans are hurting, and dry. Many are struggling with addictions, living in broken homes and need to have an encounter with the Living God. This organization is called “Meeting God in Missions”, and it exists to give the opportunity for people to do just that. Hundreds and hundreds of people have had their lives changed in this one week experience in Hato Mayor. Why? Maybe it's because they step away from their “comfort zone”. Maybe it’s because they turn off their cell phones and laptops for a week. Maybe it’s the stark reality of living in the midst of extreme poverty. Maybe it’s the morning devotions. We don't always know why - God is mysterious, and the work of His Holy Spirit is not a formula. Whatever the reason, time after time, people have life-changing encounters with God on this trip!
What about the Mission Work? Of course, the Dominicans and Haitians are blessed by what is done there. They are delighted to receive the spiritual and physical blessings that are delivered by the teams. MGM has done many great things in the “DR”, and has a wonderful reputation among the people. But the most important priority is that every traveler has an opportunity to experience God on this trip.
As Jim says, when people ask him why they should go: “Ask me again in seven days…”
