Answers

What is the process for signing up?

The first step is to pray!  Ask God to confirm your desire to go and help you with every step to get there.

Once you feel confident that you want to go on the trip, choose a week from the schedule (unless it's marked full), then complete the application and mail it with a deposit check of $500 made payable to MGM to the address listed in Contact Us.  NOTE  If your check is not with your application, please make sure there is some reference to your name on or attached to the check.

Check the meeting date on the schedule for your trip.  This is also the date of the final payment.  If you can't make the meeting, please contact Tim Pohl.

What about raising money?

Trust God to provide for your needs.  If you want to send fund-raising letters, a sample is available.  Tell people what you are doing and why  you will be surprised how supportive many people are!

Consider having a fund-raising event.  Many groups and churches have had creative ideas to raise almost the entire cost of the trip.  Let God give the ideas that will be successful!

What if I am organizing a group from my school or church?

First, PLEASE send a master list with your applications!  It can be very difficult to sort 500 applications and know who is with whom.  If you have a check that is for the group, WE NEED TO KNOW who the money is for!

Second, help us to communicate by keeping your group informed  be a point person for questions and information.  Let Tim Pohl know that you a group leader.

What shots do I need?

While nothing is required, we recommend that you have a shot for Hepatitis A and for Tetanus.  You can also check the Center for Disease Control for other recommendations.  http://www.cdc.gov/

What if there is a medical emergency?

As part of the cost, MGM has purchased a travel-accident policy for each person.  A summary of that policy can be seen by clicking here and downloading the Word file.

How much money should I take?

The cost of food and transportation in the DR is included in the cost.  You will need money for:

  • Personal gifts or souvenirs.
  • Soda, or snacks and a trip to the ice cream/pizza shop ($5-$10?)
  • Offerings for church services.
  • An offering is taken at the end of the week for the cooks and staff.

What should I pack?

You are allowed one 50 lb bag to be checked and one carry on item.  You are also allowed one personal bag.  This is plenty of room for your needs.  Most people overpack  the weather is warm and you don't need much.

Look at the list in Trip Planning  it is very complete.

What are the accommodations like?

The rooms are modest, but clean and safe.  Each person has a single bunk.  There are plenty of sinks, toilets and showers for all.  There is no hot water and we take military showers  get wet, turn off the water.  Soap up, rinse off, get out!  It sounds scary, but it's really refreshing.  There are plenty of places in the camp to find time to be alone, and plenty of places to interact.  The facility is walled and gated and locked at night.

What about the food?

The food is typical of Latin America  very mild and nutritious.  Most people are pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoy the food.

What about Water?

You CANNOT drink the water from the tap!  MGM provides plenty of fresh bottle water for your needs.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

You do not need to know Spanish.  Interpreters are provided for the various ministries.  However, most people say that they wished they would have learned just a few words from the list on the website  every word helps!

What should I know about the culture?

The Dominicans are a kind people  for the most part very joyful.  They are very receptive to missionaries.  Go on the trip with humility and you will find a great joy in getting to know them.  We also work a great deal with Haitian immigrants.  They are also wonderful people, but there is a cultural divide between the two groups.  Within the church, both are accepted, but outside, Haitians are often discriminated against.

What if I've paid and need to cancel my trip?

MGM cannot return money due to IRS rules.  However, they will do all that is possible to allow you to reschedule the trip within one year if the cancellation is due to legitimate circumstances.

Is my trip tax-deductible?

The money paid is considered a donation and is tax-deductible.
